Proud to deliver The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award
Terms and Conditions
Participants are required to attend all training sessions before being eligible to attend their adventurous journeys.
In the case of unsuccessful or abandoned practice or qualifying adventurous journeys, an additional fee of €40.00 per ‘expedition day’ will be charged to cover the cost of repeating the expedition(s) in question.
Adventurous Journeys cancelations: In the event that participants who have already confirmed attendance to any adventurous journey and then drops out FoNC reservers the right to charge an additional €40.00 per ‘expedition day’. This must be settled before participating on the rescheduled adventurous journey. In the event that a Supervisor cancels an adventurous journey beforehand there will be no additional cost involved.
Registration fees are not refundable. Participants that have not fully settled their fees before their first practice hike may not be allowed to attend.
Fees paid cover the costs of administration, insurance, participation registration, equipment, expedition training and supervision as well as travel to and from on-island expeditions. Any fees related to other individual sectional activities are between the participant and the person or organisation running the activities. The use of expedition equipment is also included at each level. See below for details.
Participants are encouraged to have completed the previous level before registering for the next level. For further details on this please contact your Award Leader.
Expedition Equipment Requirements
The Adventurous Journey Section of the Award has special requirements and will incur additional expenses for all Award participants. Each participant is responsible to ensure that they have suitable equipment to take part in their expedition. Your Award Leader can give recommendations on where to obtain the equipment you will need.
For all levels participants may use Friends of Nature Cyprus’ shared backpacks and tents though they may use their own.
Participants are liable for loss or damage to expedition equipment. Damaged tents and stoves will be paid for in full by all the participants that were assigned the tent or stove. Damaged backpacks will be paid for in full by the individual participant that was assigned the backpack. The participant, parents as well as the school will be notified if and when there should be any damaged equipment handed back.
All participants are required to use Friends of Nature Cyprus’ Trangia camp stoves. For safety and insurance reasons, Camping Gas, disposable grills and open camp fires are not allowed on Award expeditions.
All participants are required to provide their own expedition first-aid kit, sleeping bag and good quality walking / hiking shoes.
Conditions for Expedition Participation
Fitness to participate - by taking part in this expedition, participants and their parents confirm that the participant is of adequate physical and mental fitness to successfully complete the entire expedition. Participants should not take part unless they are fully prepared to complete the entire expedition.
Lateness at departure - participants are expected to be at the departure point at or before the stated departure time. The Expedition Supervisor will not delay the departure for those who are late. Those left behind will be required to make their own way to the expedition area or will be treated as a failure and be required to repeat the expedition at additional expense.
Failure to show - participants who do not show at the departure point without prior notice to the expedition supervisor will be treated as though they failed the expedition and will be required to repeat the expedition at additional expense.
Non-participation - participants who cannot for medical reasons, or whose parents do not permit them to participate, must notify the Expedition Supervisor prior to departure. If notice is given then the participant will be offered the opportunity to take part in a future expedition where space is available.
Abandoned expeditions - individual participants or teams who abandon their journey will be required to arrange their own transportation home from the expedition area. Participants will not be allowed to enter or ride in expedition supervisors' vehicles until their parents have been informed and suitable arrangements for transport home have been made. Those who abandon will be required to repeat the expedition at additional expense.
Expedition transport - participants are required to travel to and from the expedition area using the transportation arranged for that purpose. Participants may arrange with the Expedition Supervisor to be taken by their parents if appropriate, but will not normally be permitted to drive themselves.
Expedition cancellation - expeditions will not be cancelled because of weather conditions unless the Expedition Supervisor determines that the health and/or safety of participants is in jeopardy. Normally wet or cold conditions are not cause for cancellation. Participants should dress and pack appropriately for the forecasted weather and take reasonable steps en route to ensure their success. Those who abandon due to weather conditions will be treated as for any other kind of abandoned expedition and will need to repeat the expedition at additional expense.
Use of mobile phones - participants are not normally allowed to keep their phones with them during an expedition. Concealing and using phones without permission is considered cheating and may result in disqualification and repeating the expedition at additional expense or exclusion from future expeditions. Parents wishing to know how their child is doing should call the Expedition Supervisor.
School attendance - unless otherwise stated by the school, participants are not excused from school attendance on the day(s) following an expedition. Parents are responsible to ensure that their child does not miss school without prior permission from the school administration. Please contact your school if you have questions in this regard.
Expedition behaviour - participants are expected to behave in a responsible and mature manner and in keeping with their training. Failure to follow the instructions of expedition supervisors, the intentional damaging of equipment or the environment, or the lighting of camp fires without the express permission of the Expedition Supervisor may result in disqualification and repeating the expedition at additional expense or exclusion from future expeditions.
Equipment damage - damage to borrowed expedition equipment is the responsibility of the participant. The cost of replacement of lost or damaged equipment must be paid before participants are given credit for completed expeditions.
Loss or damage to personal belongings – Friends of Nature Cyprus accepts no responsibility for the safe keeping of personal items belonging to expedition participants. Participants must carry and are responsible to safeguard their personal belongings. Replacement or repair of personal items lost or damaged during the expedition are entirely the responsibility of the participant.
